Defying Silence – Empower & Engage Middle School & High School Students
-
American students are taught that we fight for and hold dear our freedom of speech – in Afghanistan, artists have no such rights and often face the prospect of death — for their art.
This unique middle school or high school assembly features award-winning Director/Producer Stacia Teele discussing her self-produced film documentary about the plight of performing artists in Afghanistan. Teele’s films have been acclaimed around the world and were featured on ABC’s Nightline.
Where typically the people of Afghanistan have only been shown in images of terrorists and war, Defying Silence demonstrates a positive vision of Afghans as creative, intelligent, humorous, and loving people.
More importantly, the assembly affirms that individuals — even students – can make a difference at the global level. Teele’s Q&A reveals her own journey making the film and directs the conversation toward ways students can identify misunderstanding and oppression either in their own lives or somewhere around the world and discuss finding ways of taking action to make – a – difference.
The program includes a presentation of the film (78 minutes), and a one-hour Q&A with Director/Producer Stacia Teele.
