Happy 2012! School Assemblies for the new year!

  • Now that the holidays are behind us and we’re all looking forward to having a great and prosperous (and healthy) New Year in 2012, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of those school who supported me and all of my school assembly programs during 2011.  Having just come off of a fantastic holiday season doing assemblies up and down the eastern seaboard all the way from Boston to Norfolk, Virginia, I came to realize that kids around our country are all very similar.  One might think that New England kids might have different sensibilities than “southern” kids.  The bad rap about New England is that people are sometimes perceived as being snooty, or upper crust, but I found quite the contrary.  The folks that hired me in New England are nearly identical to the folks in the South.  They are just parents who want their kids to be happy.  And for the most part, those kids are happy.  The eagerness that I see in these young people astounds me.  We see on the news every night about how students are doing poorly on standardized tests and the jobless rate is increasing due to our country’s lack of quality education.  I frankly don’t see that.  When I’m doing a school assembly, the kids are hungry to learn.  They are fully-engaged and ready to participate.   It all comes down to parents and teachers.  Instead of looking at the kids who are basically blank slates, we need to focus on increasing the quality of teachers.  Paying them more.  Insisting on parental involvement.  Active participation by parents is key to raising the quality of education in our schools.  A school assembly won’t make the difference, but perhaps having mom and dad sitting around the dinner table will.  Happy New Year everybody!
